Plan for Academic Enrichment
In February 2004 the Brown Corporation endorsed the Plan for Academic Enrichment, a detailed, strategic outline for a period of focused growth and investment that has affected every area of the University. The Plan outlined significant investment in the Division of Biology and Medicine, its medical school, and the Program in Public Health that would increase the size and the strength of the faculty and the student body, expand the research program, and heighten Brown’s national profile as a center of excellence in biomedical science.
Many of the core goals of the Plan for Academic Enrichment have been achieved. The medical curriculum has been completely revised, twenty-one new faculty have been hired, and the size of the medical student body has gradually increased. Not least, Alpert Medical School has jumped to number thirty-one in the U.S. News & World Report ranking of medical schools, within the top quartile, a key milestone put forth by the Plan.
The BMAF contributes tremendously to Plan initiatives, underwriting curriculum initiatives and sustaining one of its cornerstones: need-blind admissions. A strong annual fund helps to ensure the Plan’s success. Gifts to the Brown Medical Annual Fund preserve and enhance the School’s quality and accessibility and are essential to maintain its high standards.
